Our Story

Founded in 2014, Ankalia represents the best of quality and style with its combination of opulence, bling and contemporary glamour.

Ankalia’s commitment to excellence is controlled by the vision of Founder and Creative Director – Cheryl Botha. Every Ankalia piece is handcrafted by Cheryl in her studio based in Perth, Western  Australia.

After 7 years as an international ski instructor followed by more than 10 years in the corporate arena, working globally for a top 500 ASX listed company, Cheryl took a sabbatical in 2012.

During this time she made a few ticks on her bucket list – completing the Kokoda Track and hiking Mt Everest Base Camp. She also studied Fashion & Luxury Goods Management in Milan, Italy.

After completing her course in Milan, Cheryl was the first and only person ever to be selected for an Internship, working under the watchful eye of a renowned  "Papa" Sandal Artisan.

"Papa" used traditional methods and made luxury, bespoke Sandals. He is famous for handcrafting leather Sandals for Jackie Kennedy and Sophia Loren in the 60’s. Today he handcrafts unique designs for many Hollywood celebrities.

Cheryl founded Ankalia in 2014. She uses the same traditional methods taught to her by "Papa."

Cheryl will be forever grateful for the once in a lifetime opportunity given to her by her Italian "Papa" and his family.

The best things in life are made by hand with love. For Ankalia, this means handcrafting an exclusive collection of the highest quality leather Sandals, embellished with Swarovski crystals right here in our Australian studio.

For you, it means wearing only the best, limited edition handcrafted Sandals.

Every Sandal is lovingly handcrafted using the best quality Italian leather soles and tops.

Each and every piece is created with the same meticulous attention to craftsmanship insisted upon by my mentor and trainer in his small workshop in Italy.

For Cheryl, craftsmanship is not only a tradition from the past; it is also a living reality today and every day in her small studio in Perth, Western Australia.
