Omeo Wreck, Coogee in Perth, Western Australia

The best snorkel Sunday I’ve had for a very long time.
What a great initiative by the City of Cockburn to create a fantastic, historical snorkel trail just off the shore of Coogee beach. The white sandy beach of Coogee is certainly one of Perth’s best and the addition of the maritime trail makes it even better.

The Omeo is Perth’s premier shore-based shipwreck, lying just under water and only 25 metres from the shore of Coogee Beach. It came adrift from Fremantle port way back in 1905 and got stuck in the sand at Coogee. In recent times it’s become the main focus of a wonderful conservation effort by the City of Cockburn. It’s now the centrepiece for the Coogee Maritime trail. In addition to the wreck there are also more than 55 manmade structures to guide snorkelers along the underwater trail.

In addition to the underwater wreck trail there’s also a land-based trail for those that prefer to stay on dryland.

After your snorkel, I recommend you walk south along the beach to the jetty and also swim out to the pontoon and have a go on the little slippery water slide. You’ll feel like a little kid all over again.

Coogee is a newly created waterside suburb about 50 minutes south of Perth. There is free parking on Socrates Parade and from there the wreck is right in front of you.

After our snorkel we headed to The Grind Reaper for coffee and sat on the lawn over looking the marina.

A great underwater day out in Perth!
