Seal Island Kayak Adventure, Perth

You might be surprised that although I’m a Sandal Maker I actually love being active and outdoorsy. And so, because our WA border is still closed, I made a bucket list of things to do for the month of January. At the top of my list was a kayak day trip to Seal Island.
With my Google search I found two operators offering day trips by kayak to Seal Island and Penguin Island. I booked with Capricorn Sea Kayaking. They describe their one-day trip as a sea kayak eco adventure tour and that it certainly was. I felt like I was doing a little trip kind of David Attenborough style.
First of all, the trip starts at 8.30 am and leaves from Shoalwater which is about a 60-minute drive south of Perth. It was about a 6-hour kayak tour in total. Capricorn describe their tour as suitable for beginners to advanced.
After a full explanation of how to kayak we set off towards Seal Island which took less than 30 minutes. Surprisingly there are no seals on Seal Island, it’s solely inhabited with male Sea Lions lounging around and sleeping on the beach. After kayaking past the Sea Lions at a safe distance we headed to Penguin Island and that’s where we spent most of the day. We did a full walk of the island and got to see some tiny Penguins in their natural habitat as well as the most Pelicans I’ve ever seen in my life and also plenty of lizards at our lunch spot.
The beaches are beautiful on Penguin Island and there’s a calm flat-water side and a more rugged side to the island. Our tour guide Jimmy was great and he gave us a good explanation of the human history of the island and also a good insight into the beautiful natural features of the island.
A healthy lunch was provided by Jimmy and we kayaked back to the mainland by about 2.30pm.
So, for me this trip was a nice change from making sandals all day. For you, if you like a little bit of kayaking, nature, the beach, swimming and animals in their natural habitat then a kayak day trip at Shoalwater south of Perth might be a good adventurous day out for you.
Lots of love,
Cheryl xx
