Above the Hollywood Sign Hike

My Hollywood Sign hike was a bit of an adventure.
First of all, I booked an organised tour with Bikes and Hikes. They really stressed that if you’re late they won’t wait. I knew it was touch and go with getting there on time. My Uber driver was fantastic, he sped through the LA streets at break neck speed but the traffic lights were still a major hindrance. I arrived about 7 minutes late and of course the group was nowhere to be found.
I couldn’t see any signage directing me and so I just started running up the main road with the hope of catching my group. No luck! I never found them. The signage wasn’t really clear and so all I did was keep looking up in the direction of the sign and walking in that direction.
Doing this sort of thing alone is not much fun, so fortunately I met a guy from Norway and we did the hike together. It’s not hard, just an uphill stroll to “below the sign”. BUT we then figured out we could walk to “above the sign”.
We arrived “above the sign” just as it was getting dark and the sunset and views all over LA were fantastic. Really stunning! We even witnessed a marriage proposal while we were there.
The views were so wonderful that we stayed there “above the sign” until it was really dark. We then had a bit of a challenging walk back down again. There’s no public lighting at all so thanks to our iPhones we used our phone torches to see the trail and the potholes on the road. Without the light from our iPhones it would have been a bit tricky.
So, my advice is definitely walk up for sunset. It’s so beautiful! BUT get a head torch or take a really strong torch with you so you can find your way back down safely.
Lots of love,
Cheryl xx
