Shoe Superstitions

Almost every time I make a new sandal design, I put the sandals on my kitchen bench and film and photograph them. However, yesterday a friend said to me “Is it bad luck to put your shoes on a bench or is it only bad luck to put them on a table?”
Hmm! This obviously piqued my interest, so I Googled away. This is what I found:
According to Wikipedia, there is a superstition that bad luck will come to a person who places shoes on a table (luckily, I put mine on my kitchen bench for filming, not my dining table).
Another superstition common in the North of England is that when a Miner died in an accident his shoes were placed on a table as a sign of respect. So, by extension, this was seen as either tempting fate or simply bad taste.
In the world of theatre, putting shoes on a dressing room table is considered by some to bring the risk of a bad performance, whereas the opposite is the term “Break a leg” meaning good luck.
On the Spooky Isles website, I found these 8 Shoe Superstitions:
- Never put new shoes on a table
- Don’t put your shoes on the wrong feet
- Shoes on the bed bring bad luck
- Don’t wear green shoes on stage
- Don’t’ leave your shoes upside down
- Don’t wear new shoes to a funeral
- Always tie your shoelaces
- Never whistle in a shoemaker’s shop
Obviously, these are all old wives tales or superstitions probably from way back in medieval times. Fortunately, I’m not superstitious and I will continue to film my sandals on my kitchen bench and rarely on my dining room table.
Lots of love,
Cheryl xx
